Awfully Pretty

Awhile ago, our teacher was telling us about college and what we should expect when we apply. She also said that we should think of a course while we’re still in third year high school, so that next year we wouldn’t be “wandering aimlessly” or whatever.

I want to go to college. Problem is, I still don’t know what to take. I hate it because when I was young, I was already sure that I wanted to take up medicine. However, everything changed when I started high school. I don’t know what happened, but I just changed my mind.

My second option was journalism. I wasn’t completely sure about it, but I was really passionate about writing. My parents didn’t like that course, so it’s a big no for me again. I wish my journalism subject came before I lost interest in it. If it did, I think I would have been able to fight for that course. Oh well, I’m not really interested anymore :( Now, I’m considering legal management and engineering BUT I’m not really counting on it. I don’t know what will happen to me next year. Application forms for one of my desired schools will be out in April and I’m still clueless.

Also, it’s a requirement for the schools I’m applying in that they get my batch ranking. I’ve been working hard for it too. I am included in the top 25% of the batch but I know they committed an error in processing my ranking. When our guidance counselor was about to show me the list, she asked me what my average is. And I said, it was about 87. I don’t remember the decimals and those things, but I do remember seeing it in my report card. When I saw the list, my average was written as “86″ and I was just furious. I hope next time they get it right. :| I’m really striving to go up, and at the same time thinking of the course that I will take. Whew.

I know it seems like you need to hurry and figure out what you want to do in college, but in all honesty, it’s okay to go to college without having made up your mind. Many people get to college and change their major 1 or 2 times before deciding what they really want to do.

    Don’t worry – it’ll come to ya!

I hate how everyone is rushing me to choose what I want to do in college/university. It’s like, I’m 16 chill out. I totally know how you feel about not knowing what to do. I’m now kind of leaning towards teaching (french immersion). 87 or 86, whichever, is really good! I wish my marks were up around there. Right now I’m kind of struggling with school. Everything seems way too hard.

Yeah ganyan din yung prob ko back in high school but I said to myself that since i’m into computers, I should get a course which is computer-related kaya ayun :) I ended up taking IT with Multimedia and Animation haha.

    Congrats in passing DLSU! :)

Oh my gosh. How can they make such a mistake on your average…

It’s good that you school have a guidance counselor for you to consult on what you should take in college. I am now having the same dilemma as you. I don’t know which field of computing should I go into for my university (if I can get into one).

Don’t worry, I’m kind of wandering aimlessly, too. It’s hard to figure out what I want to do in the future :(

Hopefully the error in your mark won’t affect you negatively! I can’t believe they’d just ask what your average instead of checking it in the records…

Do you really have to go to college so soon? I’m 25 and I still haven’t figured out exactly what I want to do with my life. I will go to college, when I’m 100% sure of what to study. Since I’m not at the time being I work while I think about it.

I know there’s a lot of pressure to go to college right away after high school but I don’t think you should do that if you’re not even sure what you want to study. Take a while off. Work or travel. Take it easy and think through your options. I think that’s better than choosing something just for the sake of choosing. You might regret that choice later.

Gah, I hate when parents try to make your decisions for you. Why is it their business if you want to do journalism for your career… it’s your life not theirs!
Anyway… is there any chance you can take a gap year? So when you finish school you can take some time to think about what you want to do?
As with Angelica… i’m also 25 with no idea of what I want in life but luckily i had the choice of not going to university.

Good luck. I was lucky and just went to a local college. And I skiped the whole highschool thing. :/ But honestly, your first year you can just take basic stuff that you will need for any degree so you still have time to decide. and while at college taking basic stuff, talk to other students and see what they are going for and why…maybe it will help you figure something out. :)

to tell you the truth, I’m 26, and at 18 I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I went to college, got a BA and then, in my last semester (after taking an extra year so I could double major), I decided I wanted to go down a different path and go to grad school. It was the best choice I ever made, but it took another 5 years to reach the best choice for me. Asking someone at 18 to sort out the rest of their life is cruel. But that’s life.

if you really like journalism, well you should tell your parents that you really love that course and you have this “passion for writing”.. legal management is not bad either..

Yeah, we’re still young! I don’t like the pressure they give young folks like us. Teaching is good. I considered that as an option back then. :)

I’m with you there. I still have no idea what I want to do with my life. I really do want to go to college. Hopefully, I’ll find something soon. I have time though, since I’m still 14 and a freshman. Maybe I’ll end up taking a course that I love. A lot of my friends already are set on what they want to do with their life, but I don’t think I’m ready to decide that yet. Hopefully, you’ll find your “calling” very soon! Good luck. :)

As a Senior High School student, I am also obliged to choose what course I will take up in college. My parents know my interests and where I excel. I think all we have to do is ask some advice and try to research about the course we are about to choose. Just follow your heart and interest. :)

Choosing a major for college is tough. I thought I wanted to be a teacher. But by the time I went to college I was taking psychology. Then I didn’t understand the subject well enough. So I did graphic designing. Now I have BFA degree and no graphic designing job. This economic sucks for jobs. I am lucky to have a job doing what I do, but not what I went to scool for.

I was never pushed too hard to find something specific to do, but once I got out of school I just ended up in retail. I’m still there at the moment, and still have no solid clue if I’m ever going to have a real career. I hope you have better luck deciding, but I don’t think others should have any say in it really. It’s what you want to do.
